Today, it is a village specifically geared towards tourism, with many good hotels, restaurants and shops. Along the seaside and close to many beaches, Agia Pelagia is one of the best choices for visitors. Recommended […]

Aroniadika

A traditional village located on one of the island’s most important crossroads. Everybody passes through here. It has a traditional tinge and its architecture is a reminder of that found in Mani, south of Peloponnese. You can relax in a number of restaurants and cafés where you can also gather your forces to visit the […]

Avlemonas

A picturesque village by the seaside in the eastern part of Kythera. The architecture is typical of the Cyclades (a group of islands in the center of the Aegean Sea). Avlemonas is one of the most beautiful villages on the island, owing to the small inlets with their emerald-green crystal-clear waters. The short walks on cobblestone […]

Diakofti

Up until the early 1990s Diakofti had no more than 5 or 6 houses. Even back when the island was governed by the British there were plans to build a harbor and set up a small town. Nothing was erected until 1995, when the island’s main harbor started to operate. Diakofti has been developing ever […]

Fratsia

Large village located at the very heart of the island. Its inhabitants are farmers. For several decades this is where the Agricultural Exhibition has been taking place, but over the past few years it has been on the decline because of the urbanization of the lifestyle of the island’s inhabitants. The village has large areas […]

Kalamos

This is Kythera’s “agro-tourist” village. Here you will find accommodations that combine your stay with the experience of the farming life, with small hotels that also have gardens, orchards, vegetable gardens, etc. Kalamos is in the southern part of the island, nearly 2 km from Kapsali. You will meet farmers going to work in their tractors, […]

Kapsali

The very first harbor of Kythera, one of the most beautiful beaches, with its twin bays, the castle that dominates from the heights, the lighthouse on the boulder… like a phantasmagorical performance in an amphitheater whose eternal spectator is the small islet of Chytra (pressure cooker). Kapsali is Chora’s harbor, the island’s capital. For many years […]

Karavas

The village of Karavas is located in the northern part of the island, a few kilometers from Potamos, the largest of Kythera’s villages. It is close to a large ravine where all sorts of trees cover fresh water springs flowing from the hills. Most famous among the very many springs are those of Amir Ali, Keramari, […]

Karvounades

This village is located at the island’s geographical center. Karvounades’s main feature is the imposing St. George church with its sky-blue dome, yet this is not very unusual in Kythera. In the village’s central square there is a supermarket and a bakery among the many other shops. Karvounades, along with Stathianika, Pitsinianika, Alexandrades, Keramoto and Agios […]

Kythera

The island’s capital, also called “ Kythira” or “Chora” in Greek, is located in the south.  The harbor of the city of Kythera is called Kapsali and together they form one of the most picturesque places in Greece. Chora became the island’s capital during the Venetian era, when it was moved from its initial location, Paleochora (a small […]

Livadi

Located right next to Kythera’s capital, this modern trading center is the largest village in the southern part of the island, as its development has by far outstripped that of Chora over the past few years. Livadi was built in a rich valley laden with olive trees, vegetable gardens and vineyards. Here you will find places […]

Logothetianika

Near Potamos is Logothetianika, one of the oldest villages on the island and one of great historical importance. Surrounding villages include Katsoulianika, Lianianika, Ntourianika, Christoforianika, Perlegkianika and Kousounari. In the area there are many Byzantine churches as well as the monastery of St. Theodore. Logothetianika and the nearby villages attract visitors (especially foreign visitors) thanks […]

Mitata

This village is located in the center of the island, at the edge of a plateau, with a green valley spreading out before it, full of terraced gardens along the slopes through which flows the water of many springs. The view is breathtaking: in front is the valley, towards the west is the narrow gorge […]

Mylopotamos

This village is like a world in and of itself! It would be easy to write a book on Mylopotamos. The village was set up during the Venetian era and was the third largest on the island behind Palaiochora (the former capital) and Chora (the current capital). The center of the village was the castle […]

Potamos

The island’s largest village, which used to be called “the village of the lady”. Potamos is a bustling village where much of the activity is concentrated around the central square and the many cafés. Every Sunday morning there is a market where farmers from all over the island come to sell their products. The market […]

Villages of Kythira

Visit the villages of Kythira one by one. Here you can read about the main settlements of the island. Kythera has a total of 62 settlements, most of which are inland. In the Medieval Times, there were no seaside settlements such as Agia Pelagia, Kapsali, Diakofti and Avlemonas, where the piracy and attacks threatened the local populations. These began to develop only in the mid-twentieth century. The old settlements were in places that could not be seen from the sea, and some houses did not have external mortar to achieve better hiding.

The most historic villages of Kythera, such as Chora, Potamos, Mylopotamos, Karavas, Logothetian and Mitata have a long history, with architectural and residential buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. There are residences protected and maintained by the owners in the traditional forms of other times. If you visit them you will feel that you are traveling back in time and you will admire every functional or architectural element.

In the villages of Kythira there are many forgotten residences needing care and repirs. Several of them are brought to new owners and renovated, revitalizing the historic settlements of the island.

If you want to know the history and secrets of a village mix with the locals, sit down to hear the stories they will tell you. One of the most important facts you will learn is immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries in Smyrna and Alexandria early, in Australia and America later on. These houses once housed large families of seven and eight children, most of whom migrated for a better life.

Today, children and grandchildren of migrants regularly visit Kythira, many have even repaired their ancestral homes and settled on the island. It is wonderful to see immigrants who love so much their own homeland.
