A peine \u00e0 40-50 milles nautiques \u00e0 l\u2019Ouest de l\u2019\u00eele la profondeur atteint 3000 \u00e0 4000m, et au Sud-ouest du cap Tainaron, la profondeur est de 4500m, le point plus profond\u00a0 de la mer M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e. Les forts courants d\u2019eaux, en combinaison avec un vent fort et quasi permanent, ne favorisent pas l\u2019installation de fermes de pisciculture. Les poissons que l\u2019on trouve dans la mer de Cyth\u00e8re sont le Rouget surmulet, le Pagre, le Dent\u00e9 commun, le M\u00e9rou de M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, la Rascasse, le Bogue, le Picarel, l\u2019Oblade, la Dorade, le Bar, le Merlan, le Pagel, la Perche de mer, la Mur\u00e8ne etc. Les c\u00e9phalopodes\u00a0 qui vivent dans les eaux de Cyth\u00e8re sont la Pieuvre, la Seiche et le Calamar. Les crustac\u00e9s sont le Homard, le Crabe et la Langouste. Parmi les mollusques, le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre et le Bolinus brandaris, appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Porfyra\u00a0\u00bb en Grec. Connue depuis l\u2019antiquit\u00e9, la Porfyra \u00e9tait la mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re de la teinte pourpre, utilis\u00e9e pour colorer les tissus des empereurs Byzantins.\r\nLes animaux marins<\/h2>\r\nLe phoque Monachus monachus visite souvent l\u2019\u00eele de Cyth\u00e8re, o\u00f9 il trouve abri. Malheureusement, aujourd\u2019hui il nereste qu\u2019une quinzaine de ces phoques vivant autour de l\u2019\u00eele. Au large de Cyth\u00e8re il y a souvent des dauphins ainsi qu\u2019une esp\u00e8ce de baleine. Les dauphins pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent la mer entre le cap Spathi (au Nord de Cyth\u00e8re) et les petits \u00eelots Dragonares (\u00e0\u00a0 l\u2019Est), o\u00f9 la nourriture est abondante.
