Food in Kythira
Close a table today in one of the restaurants we recommend. The restaurants of Kythera offer excellent dishes based on local products based on the gastronomy of the island, influenced by the Cretan and the Mani Kitchen.
One of the classical dishes of Kythira is aubergines cooked with sour cream. It is considered to be the most classic dish, but eggplant cooking is common in Kythera. Another traditional dish is the Tziriggio fava usually accompanying vegetables. If you are in the seaside villages, try fresh cooked fish and vegetables. Try lobster, an excellent way of cooking the local lobster known as grapevine.
The herbs in Kythira are in honor here. Seasonal herbs, brassica, stamnagathi and vita are important for a balanced diet. Many of the wild herbs are also served as pickled, such as krimatos.
The local sausages will be found in most restaurants. They are spicy and taste great in various dishes with ouzo or beer.
Wines
In the restaurants of Kythera you will find mainly Greek wines either from Kythira and Crete or from the rest of Greece. The main local wines of Kythira are the red dry cousin and the white petrolanus. In Kythira, the tsipouro is also widely available in the island’s shops.
