Car and Bicycle Rentals
Kythera has a labyrinthine road network connecting 62 settlements, over 20 beaches and many attractions. For your trips you will need a car or a motorcycle. We list the best car and bicycle rental companies to make your reservations. You will find car rental companies at the airport and the port of Kythira, as well as in the large settlements.
Local Speed Limits
The speed limit in Kythera according to the Road Traffic Code is 50 km in the settlements and the capital and 80 km on the main road. Always respect the speed limits listed on the signs along the road on which you are driving.
Seatbelts
We recommend and advise occupants of rented vehicles to wear seat belts. For children there are child seats, which you can request from rental companies. Despite the technological advances in car safety, particularly with the use of airbags, it is still necessary to use safety belts. The Greek Traffic Police carries out rigorous checks on the use of safety belts and imposes corresponding fines as well as the removal of the driving license.
Do not drive when you are drinking
Be sure not to violate the Road Traffic Code driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substance. The permissible blood alcohol level is 0.05 percent. If you go over the limit you will pay a fine. If your blood alcohol content is more than 0.08 percent, this is considered a criminal offense and you will be detained. Random altercations are happening very often on the main streets, especially late at night because of loss of self control.
Park in permitted parking areas
Only park in designated parking areas where parking is permitted. If you park in restricted areas, you will receive an illegal parking call from the Traffic Police or the Municipal Police, and it is possible that your vehicle’s license plates are removed or your car towed away. Park your rented vehicle in a safe place that does not hinder the passage of other cars.
