Fishing

You have come to the Sea of Kythera, the richest sea of the Mediterranean.  Do you like to venture out on the rocks with a fishing rod, or are you partial to greater adventures and you would like to borrow a small craft to go fishing in a bight? Seek all the necessary information from the port authorities, and off you go! A whole school of fish will be on your plate at lunchtime. Common fishing techniques include net fishing, long line fishing, pole-and-line fishing and harpooning. Should you wish to go fishing please do so from the following bays, depending on the direction of the wind:

• Limnionas: Not protected from NW winds
• Melidoni: Not protected from S, SW winds
• Vroulea: Not protected from S, SE winds
• Routsounas: Not protected from W, NW winds
• Agios Nikolaos: Not protected from NW winds
• Agios Lefteris: Not protected from W, NW winds

Furthermore, the sea waters around the islets and rocks such as Chytra, Kofinidia, Kornari, Dragonares, Fidonissi, Makronissi, Messa Nissi, Exo Nissi of Limnionas, Chiri of Feloti, etc. are generally richer in marine life. Although the island does not have an extensive maritime tradition there are currently some 30 fishermen who bring back fresh fish on a daily basis. The island’s taverns offer fresh fish every day, prepared according to the finest traditional recipes.
