Έχει πολύ βαριά μυρωδιά. Ήταν γνωστό στους αρχαίους. Ο Αθηναίος αναφέρει ότι το χρησιμοποιούσαν σαν αντίδοτο για δηλητήρια. Επίσης το χρησιμοποιούσαν για παθήσεις του νευρικού συστήματος (επιληψία, υστερία κ.λπ.) Αναφέρεται στο κατά Λουκά και κατά Ματθαίο ευαγγέλιο. Ήταν συνδεδεμένο με προλήψεις κατά τον Μεσαίωνα. Επιστημονική ονομασία: Ruta chalepensis, Ρούτα η χαλέπια Οικογένεια: Rutaceae Κυθηραϊκή ονομασία: Απήγανος Ονομασία σε άλλα μέρη της Ελλάδας: Απήγανος, Βρωμοαπήγανος Συλλογή: Όλο το φυτό εκτός από τι ρίζες. Καταπραΰνει τους πόνους των αρθριτικών, των ρευματικών, της φλεβίτιδας και των κιρσών. Δρα κατά των αμοιβάδων και άλλων παρασίτων των εντέρων. Καθαρίζει πληγές και έλκη.
